Wikipedia Wankers
I am a big fan of wikipedia as a source of information, I think the idea of a massive free encyclopedia with information on every imaginable subject is a great idea but there is one major problem with it.
The ability to anonymously edit the content.
There is nothing more annoying than looking for information only to find the page filled with utter garbage. This goes double when it comes to celebrity pages where people (idiots!) have a tendancy to post rumours and idiotic comments as if it is some kind of fan-page, I expect this kind of idiocy on forums and message boards, but to see it on wikipedia is just plain wrong.
Wikipedia is intended to be a massive information source and to see this kind of behaviour just shows how little respect people truly have when they are able to act without repercussions.
I'm off to delete garbage of the wiki

Wasted Fucking Time + My New Company Mascot
Okay long time no blog.
Why?
Well I have been busy in pre-production for one of my upcoming short films which was to be a big production involving a sizable cast (mostly culled from my mates) and a fairly exotic location.
I say was because as of today I have received confirmation of bad news that has pretty much fucked the whole thing up. Not gonna go into it here but suffice to say it looks like the film may be dead, I am however attempting to rewrite the thing to take into account these problems.
That's that for now.
Here is a little bonus though, my new company mascot:
Yeah I haven't drawn his feet here, I suck.
Now I'm off to drink my height in beer.

Women's Sports ------ Plus an Update
This morning on one of those morning "news" shows there was a small segment on Layne Beachley (greatest woman surfer of all time) and her charity which helps girls achieve their dreams through various grants. This year the money went to young Hockeyroo, Casey Eastham.
And it got me thinking about the weird hypocritical nature of professional sports.
Why does all the money and airtime go to the male sports? Seriously why should the men get paid to play around while the women have to work real jobs AS WELL AS put in the same amount of training and game time? But this is only the small puzzle because I believe no-one should get paid big dollars just to play. Twenty years ago (here in Australia at least) all pro-sportsmen had to work real jobs in addition to playing.
What really puzzles me is why any red-blooded male would want to devote so-many hours of their week to watching big, ugly, sweaty blokes running around engaging in sub-homoerotic behaviour. I personally would rather watch rather hot ladies in short skirts and tight tops run around, but maybe I'm just weird, I like to watch women.
Now I'm off to watch the women's volleyball.
Robbo
Oh yeah the update. As I said recently I have mostly finished Last Stand and am moving on to my next short film. For the time being that means a little re-writing and a lot of planning and organizing. More on that soon.

A Sorta Final Word on Last Stand
As of yesterday I have completed all of the animation for Last Stand (with the exception of the Actor interaction stuff) and I'm ready to declare it almost finished. Until I get the Actors filmed I've done all I can.

Like Hanging Out With An Old Friend.
Whenever I read an interview with writers of series (whether books or movies) that are returning to write another installment they always seem to talk about the experience like they're hanging out with old friends.
And I totally understand that.
At the moment I am taking a short break from working on Last Stand (boo hoo) and have in the last couple of days been reworking (ie completely rewriting) the script for for what I hope will be my first feature film.
This script is something that I have been working on in various different ways for at least five years. It started off originally as a plan for a TV Series and has undergone many refinements since then. Everytime I get stuck on a project I always seem to come back to this one.
(okay the next is a little off topic)
I should mention that since becoming a fan of JK Rowling's Harry Potter series I have developed a sort of longing for what she has with that series: the massive intricate universe of her own creation and the fans who obsess over every detail therein. If any project of mine could measure up to that (in my eyes at least) it would be this one.
(back on topic)
Returning to these stories and characters of mine I find myself flowing through the work without any of the thinking and creating usually involved in my projects. This is simply due to the utter familiarlarity I have developed for my created universe and the fact that for me these characters exist.
Robbo
P.S. There are absolutely no wizards involved in this project.

Things That Almost Killed Me Today
Well today me and the Sheppmeister went to the EKKA which was pretty good but not as good as it used to be.
Anyway over the course of the day I had a lot of near death experiences (even for me):
* On the way to Shepp's place I was overtaken on a roundabout by a wanker on a motorbike, not using a different lane he used the same lane I was in. I almost had a heart attack.
* Sheppo, knowing my low tolerance dragged me onto some of the poorly maintained rides, there is nothing worse than hearing the safety restraints rattling about while you spin at high speed 20 metres above the ground.
* An edgy horse that got spooked by a helicopter came very close to trampling the both of us.
Glad I made it home alive

A Blast From Da Past
I was going through a bunch of discs looking for something (which I didn't find) and stumbled across a whole bunch of student films (which I aint gonna show) as well as this my first "proffessional" job. This was shown on a big screen as part of theatrical production by a Brisbane musician named Avra. Oh BTW the song is not my taste so I'd suggest turning the volume down or off:

Robbo's Top 10 Lists - Movies
Okay since I'm a filmmaker (albeit not too successful yet) I thought people might like to know what movies I like. Unlike most people my taste is very eclectic, ranging from cartoons to horror and almost everything in between:
Top 10
10. Interstellar 5555
An excellent anime sci-fi story set to Daft Punk's Discovery album. The animation is by Leiji Matsumoto, the legend behind many 80s anime hits.
9. The Princess Bride
A hilarious fantasy story starring Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin and Andre the Giant.
8. Police Story
Jackie Chan's landmark film that changed the way people all over the world look at action and made JC films uninsurable. The stuntmen involved refer to it as Glass Story, watchit to find out why.
7. Mamiya Kyoudai
While by no means the best film starring Kitagawa Keiko it is certainly the most entertaining and quirky.
6. The Karate Kid
The film that made people believe even a scrawny geek could be a champ if they learned Karate. A stand out for being one of the first films to normalise Martial Arts.
5. The Evil Dead
Bruce "the Chin" Cambell's first foray as Ash in Sam Raimi's debut film is one of the best horror films ever.
4. Clerks
Here is where Kevin Smith's Jersey Chronicles began, made for only US$25000 it is an inspiration to aspiring filmmakers everywhere.
3. Beauty and the Beast
My all time favourite Disney film and the inspiration for my love-life (when I have one).
2. Azumi
Japanese pop-idol Ueto Aya playing an awesome assassin in feudal Japan. The amazing finale sees Azumi face 200 enemies solo.
1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit
A truly unique blend of genres and techniques but more importantly a truly enjoyable film.
Next time it'll be my Top 10 Beers

Whoa!!! I'm off to the Beach Dudes
This has nothing to do with any of my projects but I just have to mention it.
Indiana Evans, probably my favourite actress at the moment not to mention absolutely gorgeous, has signed on as the face of Aussie surfer-girl clothing brand Aztec Rose for the 2007 season.
This summer is gonna rock.
See ya at the beach

Because I Haven't Posted Anything in a While
Well it's been a while since I posted anything from Last Stand, due mainly to the fact that I'd like to keep as much of the film itself secret for the time being.
But I figured I should probably post something to keep people interested so I've dug up an unposted FX test for you guys and gals.

No I'm not dead but I sure am trying.
Well long time no post. I've been busy, if you got a problem go fark yourself.
So anyway what have I been up to since last I spoke?
Well mostly work, more work and a little sleep in between.
The work on Last Stand is going well and I have completed several key scenes but since they are important to the story no videos for ya'll today.
I know it sux, so here's something to take your mind off it:
I know it cheered me up.
Uh that's it for now.

At Last A Real Person in the Cockpit
Okay so it's finally come time for me to test the two aspects (live action + CGI) of my film together.
Please note that due to underlighting the greenscreen footage (I was too lazy to get more lights from my shed) the work is less than perfect, far less. Also for some strange reason the opacity mask kept glitching so at times black boxes or fog keeps appearing, however with properly lit footage it won't be an issue.
Well enjoy:
Well I'm off to play poker and get drunk at a mate's place

A Brief Update + Cockpit Test
Okay here goes:
As of now all the models have been completed and I'm well into storyboarding out certain key scenes. I even have an approximate time for the actual shoot.
I'm currently rendering out various small scenes and shots but keep letting myself be distracted by videos of the following:
So you can forgive my distractedness.
Now the below video is awful, but it was just a quick test. The reason it's so awful is that I used a still image for the "Pilot" and my still editing program isn't the best.
Oh well enjoy:

LAST STAND - Intro (with Temporary sound)
Okay here's the deal I told my buddy Sheppo that I'd have the into to Last Stand up today complete with sound and I like to keep my word.
However due to the fact that I spent 12 hours rendering the wrong file (twice) I essentially lost a days work and was unable to give the proper time to the audio of this clip.
So the sounds, music and voiceover you're hearing are all temporary.
And for those of you masochists out there wondering, the "music" in the background is a entitled Space Is Mourning and took me about 5 minutes to come up with.
Now I'm off to hide my keyboard before someone destroys it for the betterment of mankind.

Camelot Colony - A Brief Tour
The UCSF Camelot Long Range Colony Vessel is the centrepiece of "Last Stand" the shortfilm takes place in and around this massive ship and the story revolves around the colonisiation mission.
As such I figured a little sneak peek was in order:
Overhead Map
10 Second Tour (real ride takes about 5 minutes)
And a brief lookaround.
Now I'm gonna take a break, maybe have a few beers and then it's back to work

Okay firstly long time no see. I've been busy lately with work and also my modem has been playing up a bit so no real desire to update this thing.
Until now.
I've been making decent progress with Last Stand and have a few more FX tests (actually I've had them for weeks but that's all I want to post right now) for you guys to see.
Well enjoy, I'm off.

Building the Cockpit Micro-set - Finished 4-5-07
Well I've been busy today.
As you may have heard one of my upcoming short films - LAST STAND - is a sci-fi and the one thing all sci-fi films require is great Space Fighter battles. For that I require at least part of a cockpit.
DAY ONE - Black Thunder
As always with these projects get your shit together first.
Ok we start by measuring up one of the support legs.
And use that as a guide for the rest.
Cut each of the legs at a slightly different leg because you're useless with a jigsaw.
Tack the leg to the "arm" to make it easier for screwing together.
Self-tapping screws are a gift from the gods.
Do the same on the other end.
NOTE: Always leave the barcode sticker on for that professional look.
Lay down some newspaper before you start spray-painting.
One can of spray paint covers about 90% of the two armsets.
While the paint dried I headed to Bunnings for more spray-paint and 7-Eleven for a slurpee.
Flip and finish painting, this will all be redundent tomorrow.
Yes there is another one.
While the touch-up coat dries we grab the controls (2 for $50 bargain).
Cords cut with angle pliers, handy skill if you have to deliver a baby in your toolshed.
Now it's just a matter of attaching the controls.
Glue guns are fun.
Almost finished, now just a matter of a final support strut at the back.
Okay at this point it looks kinda rough but tomorrow is all about making it look good.
DAY 2 - Fly Me To The Moon
Okay one of the controls came unstuck over night so it had to be glued back on.
And then it was on to the side panels, just black cardboard...
...tacked and glued on with care.
The panels completed.
At this point I added some paint details, attempted to add some stenciling but that was more trouble than it was worth, sadly it was messy work so I couldn't take any photos.
TADA!!! Like all good spacecraft I chose an ape as the test pilot, but since my dad was unavailable I used this guy instead.
Woo!!
Note the disastrous stenciling attempt. Oh well he looks cool anyway.
I'm off to save the universe

Forum F*ckwits
Hey there people it's been a while since I last posted anything.
Why?
Well because I've been busy with work and my short films.
But that's not what this post is about, it's about wankers on webforums.
See I'm a member of various forums dedicated to female celebrities (some dedicated to a single celeb others to celebs in general) and I've noticed that there are a lot of complete f*ckwits on them, these people obviously have no lives.
As such I've decided to list some rules that might help negate some of my biggest forum peeves:
10. Search first, every forum has a search tool, use it before "requesting".
9. While your at it, request in the requests section (most forums have these).
8. Don't reply to old threads unless you have something useful to add and not just a piece of asskissing.
7. Read the rules first, every forum has a rules thread, read it and obey it that way there's less arguments.
6. Join before posting, there is nothing worse than an idiotic anonymous post.
5. Just because you've just found a pic/video doesn't make it rare, almost everything on the internet has been seen long before you found it.
4. Don't insult people, it's that simple, whether you're insulting the celeb or a fellow forum member it's just going to start an argument.
3. Stay on topic, there is little more annoying than having to wade through pages of non-topic to find what you're looking for. If it's more than a page of discussion it's too much.
2. If you post pics/vids and don't get thanked deal with it and don't whine because unless you personally took the photos/video of the celeb during some private exclusive occasion there are tons of other people willing to provide it who realise that most forum members are ungrateful/lazy leeches.
1. Don't join the forum of a celeb you hate just to flame about them, you'll make no friends and more than likely just get banned anyway, save us all the hassle.
Okay I needed that rant.

Building a Greenscreen - Completed 06-04-07
Okay if you've read this blog well you may have noticed mentions of my filmmaking and wondered to yourself "When the hell is he gonna get to the filmmaking?" If so you're an impatient bastard. But seriously I am working towards becoming a professional director and a big part of my plan is a series of short films I'll be completing over the next few months.
Which brings us to today's little project, building a greenscreen (one of my shorts is a sci-fi). I had previously planned to get a large roll of canvas and paint that but instead I decided on using four large stretched canvases and hinging them together sort of like an old board game.
DAY 1 - The Undercoater!!!
Always make sure you've got the right equiptment.
Stirring paint is important ... especially when it's a few years old.
Now you've gotta unwrap your canvas.
And like all delicate jobs find something sharp (and for non delicate jobs use something heavy and blunt, I suggest a sledgehammer).
Always buy extra canvases or be prepared to go back to the store.
Unwrapped and ready to go.
Sometimes a product just calls your name.
It's time to grab your gear. Roller for a quick cover, big brush for fixing mistakes made with roller and small brush fore edgees and sides.
HINT: Paint barefoot, it's much easier to clean paint off feet than it is off shoes.
Feel free to play around and get into the painting groove.
And then it's on with the paint.
Soon you'll be done with the first one...
...and then the rest.
DAY 2 - The Big Green Machine!!!
Like before get your shit together first.
Grab your canvas.
Again feel free to express yourself creatively....
....and soon you'll be done with the painting.
A quick trip to your local super-hardware while the paint dries.
Pick up some Butt Hinges and a Barrel Bolt (no embarassing names there).
Also grab some pine boards, these are gonna become some handy stands for balance.
Measure twice then ignore measurements and cut anywhere.
A nice straight line for me to miss later when I'm cutting.
Pick up a hand saw, struggle in vain before realising it's a piece of junk.
Then grab the power tools. (no photos of them in use I only have two hands)
Soon you'll have some nice "even" boards.
Always sand the ends smooth I reccomend using a rotary tool like my Colt here.
Nail the stand together like this, then cut off protruding nail points (use your rotary tool) and screw it together properly.
Make your two stands mirror opposites like this.
Line up your hinges and screw them on.
HINT: Use a drill bit to make the right size gap.
First set of hinges are done.
Now the other half.
Use the drill bit trick again.
See told you not to wear shoes.
DAY 3 - Stand It Up!!!
Line up your stands. Do a better job of it than I have.
Start screwing.
Cut off protuding sharp ends with your rotary tool.
Thee Killer Colt is Legendary.
And thy engraving skills sucketh.
Lay it down to attach the stands (you may need help as this is a bitch to do).
Both stands attached and you can see mine are a little crooked but who cares.
A barrel bolt will help hold it all together (but attach it on the back not side as done here I learnt it the hard way).
Now stand it up (it was too windy to stand it up flat).
The completed masterpiece.
Tae Kwon Do Tiger volunteered to test it.
But then he buggered off to work with Keiko.
Yeah it's badly done but I was using a photo editer instead of my vid program.
Things I Learned:
- Rollers soak up more paint than they put on the canvas.
- Canvases make good kites.
- Screw with pressure on top to avoid crooked screws.
- Don't wear loose clothes when painting, you'll always get paint on them.
- Power tools are your friends and like friends don't mess with them when they're working or it could get messy.
- You will always lose at least one screw.
- Cutting disks get very hot but the cut off nails/screws get even hotter.
- Next time I gotta get a friend to take the photos
Alright it's all done now, soon you'll see a real test of the greenscreen.
